The healing through herbs is lost in
the history of the times. That’s why you possibly have never heard of a
compound called Berberine. It has been studied extensively for the treatment of
type 2 diabetes, cholesterol and more recently in the treatment
of breast cancer and congestive heart failure.
Berberine has been used for decades, if
not centuries, with few reported side effects. Given the limitations of existing medicines, evidence emerged
that berberine may be a useful new treatment for type 2 diabetes.
However, despite its widespread use
in traditional medical practices,
their effectiveness has yet to be properly evaluated after the process of defined clinical trials.
What is being done, can be evidenced by the large number of extremely interesting studies,
being published by scientists in the field of nutrition.
Too good to be true?
Apparently this compound can do all this and more. On the site of Pubmed (the most complete electronic bookstore in the world where almost all scientific medical works are cataloged) there are over 3400 scientific work carried out about Berberine.

What is berberine?
The berberine is a natural alkaloid (C20H18NO4) existing in the roots,
stems and rhizomes of various plant species.
It has been used since ancient
times in traditional Chinese and Asian medicine to treat infections, bacterial and parasitic infections.
Their beneficial effect on insulin resistance and in lowering hyperglycemia was discovered by chance when administered in diabetic patients
with diarrhea.
Effects of berberine on health:
Type 2 diabetes: Arguably the use of Berberine is able to reduce the sugar levels in the blood of diabetic people as effectively as a drug called metformin. It may also help reduce the degree of resistance to insulin action.
The reports of the traditional Chinese medicine, of the beneficial effects of the use of berberine, for diabetic people with type 2 diabetes, now have some scientific evidence to support this claims.
The collaboration between Chinese, Korean and Australian scientists, at the Garvan Institute in Sydney, showed that this natural product, berberine, can be a valuable new treatment for type 2 diabetes.
Cholesterol: Several studies have shown that Berberine can substantially reduce not only cholesterol but also the triglycerides and even substantially lower levels of atherogenic proteins.
Liver: Research also indicates that Berberine can also substantially reduce the degree of fat infiltration in the liver thereby reducing the risks of hepatic cirrhosis appearance.
Congestive cardiac insufficiency: Recent research indicates that Berberine can also help severe cases of congestive heart failure.
Cancer: Research has indicated that Berberine can also be used to combat various types of cancer, among them: breast cancer, prostate cancer, skin cancer, stomach cancer and leukemia.

Other possible therapeutic actions not yet proven:
Good for depression, schizophrenia and some types of dementia such as Alzheimer's disease.

Contraindications:
It should not be used in newborn babies. Also it can not be used during pregnancy because it can have effects on the fetus causing malformations.

It amazes me to know that a compound potentially useful to health is being ignored by the powerful pharmaceutical
industry. Even more amazing is how the big media and big renowned scientific centers seem to ignore or do not want to inform the general public about the therapeutic effects of a useful compound as the Berberine.
Does the fact that it is cheap, and not be able to be patented, may have something to do with it?
